Pet carrier buying requirements

A pet carrier buying brief starts with the animal and the space it needs. Prepare that information before comparing proposed carriers or deciding how to review a sample.

Animal measurements

Provide the measurements you want the fit review to use and describe the animal's posture during the intended carrying activity. Ask for the usable internal dimensions and opening dimensions of the proposed carrier.

Carrying situation

Explain whether the carrier will be carried by hand, placed in another space or used in a different arrangement. Give the relevant space restrictions and request a description of the proposed handles, closures and access points.

Sample fit review

Request care instructions and a sample description. Define how your reviewer will check access, closure and the internal space against your own measurements; confirm any transport operator's requirements separately for the intended journey.

Keep carrier approval specific

When a proposed carrier is reviewed, record the internal dimensions and opening details alongside the animal measurements supplied. Identify which carrying situation the review covers. If the closure, shape or dimensions change, request an updated description and review the change against the original space brief before confirming the selected carrier.

Define the journey before choosing a carrier

For a carrier inquiry, describe the points at which the animal enters, waits inside and leaves the bag. Include the person responsible for carrying it and any space in which it must be placed. If your purchase serves different animals, separate their measurement records instead of sending a single average. Ask the supplier to relate each proposed size to the corresponding record. Keep the fit decision with your own reviewer and request clarification whenever an external size description does not explain the space available inside.

Prepare photographs or a simple sketch of the intended placement area, with your own measurements attached. Ask which parts of the proposed carrier remain outside that area when handles, straps or openings are in use. Describe whether access from above or from the side matters to your handling routine. Request photographs showing the actual opening and closure arrangement of the proposed sample. Avoid approving the shape from a closed exterior photograph alone; ask to see the details your reviewer needs to assess entry and removal.

For sample review, write down the carrying actions you intend to assess rather than requesting an unspecified quality check. These might include opening the bag, placing it in the intended location and checking how the handles can be held. Ask for instructions relevant to those actions and have the reviewer note any restrictions. If cleaning between uses is part of your routine, request the care method for the proposed materials and identify which parts can be accessed for cleaning. Keep cleaning questions separate from transport acceptance.

Before selecting the carrier, compare the supplier's size description, sample photographs and your placement sketch together. Record any difference between the proposed sample and the item being quoted, including closures, access panels or carrying attachments. Ask whether the quotation refers to the same arrangement your reviewer examined. For an assortment, retain a separate decision for each size and intended animal group. If a transport operator has its own conditions, obtain that operator's decision for the intended trip and retain it separately from the purchasing approval.

Ask the reviewer to distinguish the carrier's usable interior from its external outline in the fit notes. If the proposed bag changes shape when opened, request photographs of that state alongside the dimensions. Keep the entry opening assessment connected to the intended animal measurements so a larger exterior description does not resolve an unanswered question about getting into the carrier.
