Metal surface finishing requirements

Metal surface finishing requirements should identify the part, the surfaces and the intended result. Finishing processes listed in the business scope include coating, electroplating, polishing and anodising; ask which process is proposed for your component.

Surface map

Mark the surfaces to be treated and those to remain untreated on the component drawing. Identify any appearance sample and explain which faces your reviewer will use for visual comparison.

Process and material discussion

Give the component material and requested finish. Ask whether the proposed treatment applies to the specific part, and request a description of the process and any drawing changes it requires.

Acceptance record

Define the inspection information you want with the proposal. Request a sample or finish reference for review and record the agreed appearance and dimensional requirements together rather than relying on a process name alone.

Link finish approval to the part

Keep the agreed finish reference with the part drawing and material request. Ask the supplier to mark any change in the proposed treatment or the surfaces it covers. Have the reviewer compare a proposed sample with the requested appearance and inspection criteria, then record the selected description against the same component revision.

Define which surfaces the finishing request covers

Start the finishing brief with the part drawing and identify the particular surfaces to be discussed. Mark visible areas, mating areas and any surfaces the buyer wants treated differently, using your own engineering requirements. Describe the intended appearance or assembly concern without selecting a treatment solely from its name. Ask the supplier to respond to the marked drawing and explain the proposed approach for the specific part. If the inquiry includes several materials or components, request separate responses rather than assuming one finishing proposal applies to every item.

Where appearance matters, provide a buyer reference and explain which aspect the reviewer is comparing. State whether the reference concerns colour, texture or another visible detail, and ask for the proposed sample arrangement. Keep an appearance reference separate from requirements about dimensions or the way the part fits an assembly. Ask your engineering reviewer to identify any drawing requirements that need further discussion before a finish is selected. Do not use a photograph of a different part as a complete specification for the surfaces in the current inquiry.

Request the description and review documents relevant to the proposed treatment, with the part and drawing revision identified. Ask how the supplier proposes to distinguish treated areas from areas excluded by your brief. If a sample is used, retain photographs and notes indicating the surfaces reviewed and the buyer reference used for comparison. Record the review conditions your team chose for appearance assessment. Questions about the effect on assembly or dimensions should go back to the responsible reviewer rather than being settled by an attractive sample surface alone.

At quotation approval, check that the finishing description, marked drawing and sample decision refer to the same component. Keep exceptions and unresolved surface questions visible in the purchasing file. Ask the supplier to identify changes if a different material, treatment description or coverage arrangement is proposed. Review those changes against both the appearance reference and the assembly requirements before accepting the alternative. For repeat purchasing, supply the accepted part and finish references together so a general treatment name does not replace the detailed surface coverage and sample arrangement previously reviewed.

Where the buyer wants appearance reviewed on a particular face of the component, mark that face explicitly on the sample record. Keep any accepted comparison reference with the marked drawing. If a proposed change affects the component beneath the finish, return the relevant assembly and surface questions to the engineering reviewer rather than approving the finish in isolation.
